Steroids have been in the news lately
The governor of California,
Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as many
baseball celebrities have warned about the use of steroids, however, have
spoken in favor of using
legal alternative supplements. What are they and
how do they work? The art and science of bodybuilding has had a dramatic effect on our
understanding of basic fitness. Not the least of these is a better
understanding of the chemical processes involved in muscle contraction,
strength, endurance and growth. Perhaps just as important has been a better
understanding of the importance of the rest and rebuilding cycle and how we
might support it nutritionally. So precise have become the training and
supplementation regimens in the highly competitive world of bodybuilding
that serious bodybuilders engage in disciplined “cycling” and “stacking” of
specific nutrients in specific doses at specific times. Nutritional science
has brought forth supplements with unfamiliar sounding names like: GABA, HMB,
ZMA, CoQ10, 20-H, CLA and creatine monohydrate, all to help bodybuilders
increase muscle mass and minimize fat. Add to that a blender full of amino
acids like arginine, ornathine, glutamine, lysine, isolucene and valine. The
bodybuilders’ lexicon is filled with terms like: ATP, lactic acid, loading
phase and lipotrophic formula.
Aside from these less familiar supplements and terms, there are advancements
happening with the more familiar supplements like herbs and
protein powders.
What used to be a fairly simple choice is now a cornucopia of choices. Which
protein powder is best for your body type, fitness goals and training
regimen? Whey? Soy? Milk? Egg? Spiriluna?
As you can see, there are many competing choices and approaches to
supplementing with the intent of increasing muscle size, strength and
endurance. We will endeavor to show you the best sources of information and
bodybuilding products. |
